Texas Trip - Chapter 3 - The Alamo

Renember the Alamo? or was that "Re-memmmm-berrrr the AL-AAAAAAAA-MOOOOO!" If you grew up in Texas, you sure do - we had Texas History classes for about a semester in 4th grade, and again ALL YEAR in 7th grade. The book was nearly as big as our US History book in 8th grade! Texas is very proud of its history and heritage. We all know the general story of the Alamo - Santa Ana and his troops storm the Alamo, a misson turned fortress, and kill everyone there, including the famous Davy Crockett, among others. When you hear the story, your mind conjures up images of a great fortress, similar to European castles, moat excluded. Reality today is a bit different. The Alamo is literally in the middle of downtown San Antonio - skyscrapers surround it, busy traffic flys by. And most of it is gone - it used to take up 2-3 football fields in size, and now it's not even a block. Nevertheless, it's still impressive, and very awe inspiring to be inside and know what occurred there. When we first started going to San Antonio, you weren't allowed to talk in the Alamo, in reverance for it once being a misson church and in respect for all of the lives lost within the walls. They've relaxed that a bit, but it's still a fairly serene place. Inside, you'll find a few off-set rooms with artifacts found at the Alamo, as well as a replica of the entire grounds as they were at the time fo the battle. The current grounds have history related to the missionaries' use of the building, as well as the aquaduct used to bring fresh water into the building.
