Ty had another exciting day at work yesterday. Just before 8:00 AM he had a call to a truck-train accident. He showed up to the scene and it turns out it's more of a truck-house accident! A 16 year old kid (just turned 16 last week) drove across town 18 blocks going over 90 miles an hour. He ran through a house, pushed a large trailer all the way across the back yard, and came within feet of running into a stopped train at the back of the backyard. (As a not-so-important couple of side notes: 1) this yard is the same one where two Father's Days ago, they worked what they thought was a homicide case that turned out to be a natural death from the elements and over consumption of alcohol case and 2) I can't remember the exact number, but I think Ty said he's worked FIVE vehicle-house collisions since he's been here, and other officers have worked non. Apparently he's the lucky guy that gets all of them!) As he spoke with the kid, the kid said he didn't really remember what happened and felt like he was in a dream while he was driving. He had smoked a synthetic marijuana (K2) that morning with some friends. This synthetic marijuana is more like PCP laced marijuana because it has hallucinogenic properties as well. It's a "relatively" new, legal product. The morning prior to the accident, one of the State Trooper Investigators got on the local radio station and explained all about K2, where it can be found, the effects, etc. Not very smart - of course kids are going to go try it after all the hype he built around it and information he gave! The really neat thing is that the DEA is working very hard to get this substance made illegal Federally. They called and want Ty's case because it is the best case they have in the nation so far to help them get the substance banned!! It would be so cool to know that my husband was one of the driving forces for making something so dangerous illegal! I guess our family is all about breaking new ground and setting precedence... I have a hearing in December with three out of state expert witnesses that will determine whether certain testimony from Officers is allowed into evidence in DUI cases in the State of Nebraska, not quite as big a deal as getting K2 banned, but still laying down some groundwork!
